Leonard Drury has had a rather ordinary life, at least for someone from his background. He was born to two fairly well off parents. His mother was a nurse at a hospital in downtown London and his Japanese father was a professor of language at Oxford University who cherished arts and language. They were both hard workers and liked to live their lives as much as they possibly could. His parents had been put together in an arranged marriage between the two families. His father had ties to an ancient samurai clan while his mother had ties to English nobility. It was a union meant to restore both families, though Leonard never cared much about those titles bestowed upon his parents, and neither did his parents, or so it seemed to Leonard usually.
As a young child, he grew up well-protected in a house complete with a nanny as both his parents enjoyed their working lives. As a really young child, these nannies changed from time to time as many became fed up with their duties of practically raising the boy themselves. It wasn't as common these days for children to have a permanent caretaker. However, when he was around five years old, Leonard received a blessing in his life. A young lady named Elizabeth decided to take on the challenge of becoming his permanent mistress. And he adored her. She tutored him, cared for him, protected him, and spoke to him as if he were an adult. She could tell he was intelligent even from a young age and never spoke down to him or treated him like the child that he was.
When he was eight, Elizabeth began to coach Leonard in worldly histories and cultures. She instructed him in understanding the mannerisms of different cultures, encouraged him to speak in foreign languages. She even carefully assisted him with understanding maths and sciences, keeping him at the same pace as the rest of his peers, if not more advanced. Leonard enjoyed his time with Elizabeth. Generally, they shared their discussions over a cup of tea, where they talked with each other for hours on end until Leonard grew tired. Then, Elizabeth would allow him a snack—usually scones or a parfait of some kind—before they would either continue their discussions or she'd switch subjects. She encouraged his intelligent mind to absorb new things, to study languages and to explore the world around him.
Everything seemed perfect to a younger Leonard. When he turned eleven, it was encouraged that he should attend public schools. It had been a forethought in Leonard's mind. He'd watched other children interact with each other safely from his manor home, sometimes daydreaming during his lessons with Elizabeth about going outdoors to play around with the other children. She would usually 'tsk' gently with him, ruffle his hair, urge him to have another cup of tea, then continue their discussion as if the interruption had never happened. She was the one who prepared his documents, sent him off to the interview and made sure he was comfortable in his new school.
Leonard attended the Plymouth College in Devon, England, as soon as he turned eleven. He was sent off to boarding school, though he remained in constant contact with Elizabeth while he was there. He found all too often that he didn't fit in too well with his fellow classmates. When they sought to play sports, rough house a bit or flirt with the girls, Leonard chose instead to occupy himself with a good book or even reading a language dictionary. He excelled in most of his subjects, having learned quite a bit of it already from Elizabeth at different points in his history. At Plymouth College, he studied Latin, history, music, maths, geography, classical civilizations. He even studied both French and Spanish, though they were review for Leonard. Elizabeth had seen to it that he'd appreciated those languages as a child, as they were important in English history.
In his free time, he studied Japanese and Japanese history, connecting more with his father's roots. He would often write home to his parents, using both English and Japanese in hopes to attract their attention. However, he received short letters in response, telling him that he was doing so well and that they were so proud of him. They seemed to be quite content with things as they were. He did receive the occasional care package from Elizabeth, until his caretaker suddenly stopped contacting him. Leonard later learned from his father that she'd found a suitable husband abroad in America.
It was this that started the thought process that Leonard could travel abroad. He wouldn't be stuck in England, alone, forever. His parents wanted nothing to do with him, though he'd spent most of his life trying to win their approvals. He had the ability to get up and walk still, and he had the intelligence to schedule his own life now. When he graduated from Plymouth College at the top of his class, Leonard started to make plans to travel overseas. He knew that he needed to get away from his life that was his life. His parents clearly wanted little to do with him, and what friends he'd made at Plymouth College had already moved on to something better themselves. He knew he couldn't just up and leave, however. He needed a plan. He was eighteen and had lived solely upon the welfare of his rich parents for most of his life.
He took up some small part-time jobs, saving money and keeping it himself rather than putting the money in a bank. He kept a safe in his room in a small apartment that he'd rented out in London. He worked many different positions, anything from being a waiter, to being a bank teller. With his grades, he received praises from most of his employers quite easily. However, he landed a position at a local four star hotel as the concierge and instantly fell in love. Here, he could work with other people, interact with them. He never had to worry over his life being boring. And he could even put his languages to good use, as well.
It was around now that Leonard received word from his parents. It wasn't to congratulate him on his achievements or the money that he'd earned for himself. It was, however, to inform him that they had found the perfect bride. Some girl from London who was also from a wealthy family with ties to nobility. He was twenty and it was high time that he properly married to secure the future of their fortunes. Leonard decided then to make his final moves. He'd done what his parents had wished for most of his life. He was tired of being the 'good child', the one who always had to obey. He knew that marrying this girl meant taking on a proper role, and that wasn't one that he wanted to do. However, Leonard was smart enough to know he couldn't just up and leave London. His parents would probably then at least take a notice of him as more than something than someone to continue on their legacies after their deaths. So he started saving money more carefully and planning.
When Leonard had saved around the equivalent of $3,000 USD, he knew he needed to make his move. It was enough to start plotting and planning his trip to America. Leonard implied to his supervisors that he wished to travel abroad to America to experience the hotel business in the multinational country. This was a long process, and took nearly half a year to complete with visas and applications and everything. However, finally, Leonard received permission to begin his work as the concierge at The Wynn, a sister hotel to the one that he was working at. By this time, he had earned more than enough to support himself for a year or so if he planned everything properly.
Finally, he could flee England, he could flee his boring life of privilege. Not that he minded on most days; however, sometimes being lonely like this was a difficult thing for Leonard. He wasn't going to be the perfect obedient son anymore. And he definitely didn't feel like becoming betrothed to some girl who he had little knowledge of and no interest in.
Upon arriving in America, Leonard would spend another half year training at a hotel in Washington, D.C. He didn't mind the training. In fact, Leonard thoroughly enjoyed it. However, during the final two weeks of his training before he was due to arrive in Las Vegas, Leonard began hearing a voice in his head. At first, he just thought that he was going crazy. But as the voice kept talking to him, sometimes in English and sometimes in Japanese, Leonard knew he wasn't really crazy. There really genuinely seemed to be another entity living inside of him. He very nearly had written home to his mother, knowing that she'd know some of the best British doctors. However, this would be admitting defeat, and that was something that Leonard didn't want to do. He had also received an old leather-bound journal in the mail, a place where he could read Sebastian's words if he wished to. It was easier, shockingly easier, to speak in his mind to Sebastian however.
So he started to question the voice in his head. He tried asking for information about it. This was a struggle at best. The voice gave half answers and was very good with word games. He knew how to answer without really giving an answer, even though he dutifully told Leonard that he would never lie to him. Leonard did manage to successfully guess that this voice was Sebastian Michaelis, but whomever that was, he didn't know. He did learn that Sebastian had an obsession with cats, spoke at least both English and Japanese fluently and seemed to be from either Elizabethan or Victorian England, as he frequently mentioned “Her Majesty”. Leonard didn't suspect that Sebastian meant Elizabeth II, for whatever reason. The man's language seemed far too formal, far too precise, for the modern Englishman. And he seemed to be intimately familiar with those time periods whenever Leonard brought them up in discussion.
There would be times when, even during his training, Sebastian would offer hints or suggestions to improve his work. After following them doubtfully the first few times, Leonard received abnormal praise from his supervisors. It confused him, but no matter how many times he tried to get proper answers out of Sebastian, the voice just kept trying to turn things into a game of chess.
Then he moved to Las Vegas, to officially work at The Wynn as the concierge. It seemed as soon as he crossed into Las Vegas that it became easier to communicate to Sebastian. There was even a time or two when, alone at night, Leonard chanced a glance in the mirror and noticed his eyes were an eerie red. It had definitely freaked him out, until Sebastian's soothing voice carefully explained that those were HIS eyes. Still, Leonard was concerned, and managed to get a promise out of Sebastian that the other would never reveal himself while Leonard was at work. Sebastian had agreed almost all too quickly to this promise, his deep voice soothing and comforting.
So far, Leonard has found Sebastian's advice to be worth his while to accept. He listens to the voice inside his head, though sometimes he gets the feeling that there's still far more to Sebastian than the other ever would admit.
Alter: (Give us a quick background of the Alter and their source in two paragraphs. How does the Alter feel about the situation? Are the character and Alter in conflict with each other? Sebastian Michaelis serves as the butler to the thirteen year old Earl Ciel Phantomhive, and wears the mark of the primary butler of the Phantomhive household. He is responsible for many things within the Phantomhive household as well as other duties above and beyond that of just being a butler. For example, Sebastian takes great care to look well after his “young master”, as he fondly calls Ciel. He personally dresses Ciel every morning, prepares only the finest of teas and meals, and makes sure that the mansion is run smoothly and on a perfect schedule. Sebastian also acts as Ciel's tutor most of the time, challenging him in ways that normal hired hands would not. He insists that his young master keeps a tight and constant schedule with his lessons and even goes as far as to teach him how to perform Bach pieces on the violin, something which Ciel says is quite challenging.
However, this is all a surface act. Sebastian is not simply just a butler. He's quite fond of informing those around him of this fact, which Ciel finds rather annoying. There are many times where Sebastian states that he's “one hell of a butler”. In English, this is a reference to “Hell”, or the place where demons reside. In the original Japanese, this translates to: “私はあくまで執事ですから” or in Romanji Watashi wa aku made shitsuji desu kara. In Japanese, あくま, akuma is the word for demon. “Aku” is a turn of the phrase “demon”. Sebastian is enjoying his witticism, which to most people who hear it , it means nothing special. Ciel often states that he's annoyed by Sebastian's cleverness with this phrase and prefers rather that Sebastian inform people, “What would a butler of the Phantomhive family be if they cannot even do this?”
After saving Ciel's life shortly after the Earl's parents were killed, Sebastian accepts a contract with the young Earl. He acts as Ciel's arrow, his bodyguard, and will do whatever he can to protect his young master. In exchange, Ciel will allow Sebastian to eat his soul when he avenges his parents' murders and makes those who hurt his parents suffer in humiliation as much as he had. Sebastian is quite fond of this idea, as he has been known to say that his young master's soul smells quite delicious and even when he's offered many souls, he turns down the offer, saying that there is only one soul that he wishes to eat. Ciel acts as Her Majesty's “Guard Dog” and runs the underworld of England to solve crimes that even Scotland Yard cannot solve; Ciel is often quite confident of the contract. Sebastian has managed to successfully take out the entire Italian mafia in London in a matter of minutes under Ciel's command, as well as even kill an angel under his master's orders.
He is, in the end, denied this opportunity because of the selfishness of a boy called Alois Trancy. Alois contracts with another demon butler known as Claude Faustus, but Claude only wishes to devour Ciel's soul instead. Alois, furious and disgusted that his own demon doesn't want him, makes a second contract with another demon called Hannah. His wish is that neither Claude nor Sebastian can obtain Ciel's soul and that instead, Ciel be turned into a demon. Sebastian, therefore, is still contracted to Ciel, but can never eat his young master's soul because Ciel will forever be a demon. At the end of Kuroshitsuji II, Sebastian comments that he will forever be a “demon's butler”, yet again enjoying his witticism but in a different way.
Journal/Key: (What does your character/Alter's journal and key look like? Very brief, 2-3 sentences.) Leonard's link to Sebastian is that of an old Victorian, leather-bound journal. The key is a black, quill-like feather that comes from Sebastian's true demonic nature.
(Three storylines that can be filled by other characters in play. These can be open storylines for characters or for Alters. For example, your character can have a storyline for their biological sister or for their Alter’s spouse. Must be open upon character’s introduction into the game, not pre-filled!)
Open: The “Master”. Sebastian would love to see his young master here, in demonic form, of course, as otherwise Ciel would be underaged. Just any master wouldn't do.
Open: The Annoying Love Interest. In the canon, Sebastian is constantly desired by a cross-dressing shinigami named Grell Sutcliffe. However, Sebastian wants nothing to do with “her” and even finds Grell annoying and disgusting. He enjoys finding new ways to torment Grell. Having an annoying love interest, for either Leonard or Sebastian, would be most amusing.
Open: The nanny. This would be Elizabeth, Leonard's beloved nanny who left to America to be married to some rich husband, leaving her poor charge in the hands of his parents.
(Please give an example of at least two paragraphs. Introduce both character and Alter in one short piece. Leonard was on his way to work. The Wynn was a pretty nice establishment and he had a chance to visit with a lot of interesting people. Las Vegas, so far, had turned out to be an interesting city. The young Brit kept his thoughts mostly to himself as he passed strangers on the Strip, and when he arrived at the classy hotel, he greeted his colleagues with a cheery smile. It was like any other day.
Slipping into his role at the hotel was natural. Some days he acted as the doorman, but most days he was the concierge. He enjoyed being a concierge the most. It was a new challenge every day and it gave him an opportunity to speak to people from all over the world. The particular client he was assisting at the moment was from Japan and they were only in town for the week. “Moushimasu Leonardo desu,” he greeted the Japanese tourists formally, with a polite bow as was customary to Japanese guests. It was for reasons such as this that Leonard was usually selected to work at the concierge desk; many of the other employees at The Wynn typically knew only Latin-based languages, if they knew another language at all. “The Wynn e youkoso irasshaimashita.” The Japanese slipped off his tongue quite naturally, and internally he couldn't help but smirk to himself. He was proud of his working knowledge of the world's languages. Indeed, it paid off immensely when he was dealing with that annoying voice inside of his head sometimes. Here, in Las Vegas, he was quite happy. He wasn't some boring doctor or some ridiculous teacher like his parents had insisted that he become.
After confirming the tickets that the Japanese couple wanted, Leonard shifted the paperwork around on his desk. His eyes surveyed the room around him, checking to see if anyone else required his assistance at the moment. It was then that the voice he often heard inside of his mind chose to speak up. He could hear Sebastian quite well sometimes, whereas other times the damned man decided to be oddly quiet. Usually, it was after he spoke in Japanese or finished a task that he could hear Sebastian rather loudly. “Ah, it is blissfully wonderful to listen to your Japanese, Leonard,” the voice said, practically purring his first name. The voice was a silky calm compared to the rest of the world around him sometimes. Sometimes the voice grated on his ears, like when he tried to discover more about it. Leonard was learning to think his responses rather than say them aloud; it made him appear less crazy if his thoughts remained in his head. “You do speak it rather well. I suppose you are quite proud of your accomplishments. As you should be. It is only natural, after all, for a concierge at The Wynn to be able to communicate to guests in their native language, is it...OH, MY, what have we here?”
Unaware to Leonard, Sebastian had spotted something using Leonard's vision. Leonard didn't have to think to figure out what the idiot had seen. Two seconds later, Sebastian was off on a rant about how wonderful and beautiful cats were. Leonard was learning to tune these out the more frequent they became. He leaned back in his chair, letting a hand rest against his temple as though attempting to get rid of a headache. He also didn't notice that his usual blue eyes had taken a slightly reddish tint to them. No one had yet to comment on this ever so slight change to the dutiful concierge, but the moment had passed almost as soon as it had begun. Sebastian was content that he'd seen some stupid cat, and Leonard was back to focusing on his work.
His fingers tapped along the keyboard, checking today's schedule of events, making sure everything was going as smoothly as planned. He did manage to mutter, beneath his breath in Japanese, “Baka neko,” in reference to Sebastian. He knew the idiot sometimes preferred Japanese to English, and this was another one of those rare moments. There was still more questions that he had for Sebastian; the former butler's voice was always amused whenever Leonard would try to ask certain questions to figure the other voice out. For now, however, he would have to be appeased by this burst of energy from the idiot in his head. His mind focused on his tasks at hand, calculating easily the number of guests for the day, organizing the paperwork that the other concierges had been working on.
